The programme

WHO NEEDS BUZZ?

The BUZZ programme is for students who require more practice and extra opportunities for over learning in phonics. It relies on the student having already been taught phonics in the classroom by their teacher.

CRITERIA FOR ENTRY

Students must have already had the corresponding stage of phonics taught to them in the usual class programme. BUZZ reinforces what has already been taught and so is not for students who have not had phonics before.

HOW IS IT DELIVERED?

BUZZ is delivered in short (five minute) one on one lessons by a teacher or teacher aide who has already been trained in and experienced in teaching Primary Phonics.

WHO CAN TEACH BUZZ?

The person delivering the programme must:

– be trained in and understand Primary Phonics

– know the phonemes and can hear them correctly for the accent of the country in which BUZZ is being taught. To check your understanding for the New Zealand accent, watch video #3.

THE BUZZ STAGES

Each Primary Phonics stage matches the BUZZ stages. E.g., Primary Phonics Stage 2 matches BUZZ Stage 2.

N.B. As the BUZZ programme is a reinforcement programme, it does not replace the class phonics programme. BUZZ students should still participate in the existing class phonics lessons at their level. BUZZ is intervention and so therefore operates as well as, and not instead of, normal class teaching.
